Broken Vaillant ecoFIT Pure combi boiler with gas supply issues displaying F28 fault code
This is a short clip of a Vaillant ecoFIT Pure combination boiler with an F28 fault code.
The boiler shown in this video is actually technically of a Glowworm Ultimate 3 30C, but is also known as a Glowworm Energy 30C, they are all essentially the same boiler based on the Vaillant ecoFIT Pure design which we are most familiar with.
The user display and interface on the Glowworm version is different but they are essentially the same as the Vaillant ecoFIT.
All the derivatives of the Vaillant ecoFIT Pure are subject to all the same fault codes including the F28 fault code.
The F28 fault code on these boilers is an ignition lockout fault code, which is means the burner failed to stay lit and the boiler has shut down as a safety measure.
Ignition lockout on a boiler can be caused by numerous issues such as an issue with the gas supply, and issue with the gas valve, a blocked condensate trap or even an issue with the printed circuit board.
The boiler in this video fires up when the hot water is running but as soon as the burner ramps up it runs out of gas as shown on the digital manometer, and the burner goes out to the inevitable F28 fault code.
Issues like this can be easily misdiagnosed by inexperienced engineers as a faulty gas valve or faulty printed circuit board, which is why its important to do the basic safety checks first, such as checking the inlet gas pressure as shown in the video.
The issue with this boiler turned out to be a partially closed emergency control valve on the gas meter which was not getting enough gas through to the boiler.
Once the emergency control valve on the incoming gas supply was fully opened the boiler continued to work as normal.
We do have another post talking about the F28 fault code on Vaillant ecoTEC boilers in more detail.
Partially closed Gas supply emergency control valve
Above is an image of the partially closed emergency control valve on the incoming gas supply, causing a restriction of gas to the boiler which inevitably leads to the F28 ignition lockout fault code.
Issues with the gas supply on these boilers can also lead to an intermittent F29 fault code.
