Vaillant ecoTEC Sustain failed gas valve, boiler F28 fault code
This is a clip of a Vaillant ecoTEC Sustain 34 Combi boiler with a failed gas valve, displaying the F28 or F.28 fault code, which turns into a “3 SEC” flashing on the display.
Maybe someone who knows better can explain why the Vaillant ecoTEC Sustain boiler exists in the first place?
The ecoTEC Sustain is a strange hybrid boiler and not a true ecoTEC boiler in our opinion.
The bottom end of the Sustain boiler’s hydraulics is from a Vaillant ecoFIT boiler.
The top end of Sustain, the boilers primary Sermeta heat exchanger and burner door etc is from a proper ecoTEC boiler.
The gas valve is from a 2nd generation ecoTEC Pro boiler.
Not sure what gap in the market Vaillant created this boiler for, but were open to suggestions from anyone who thinks they might know.
This particular boiler had a failed gas valve and a leaking diverter valve amongst other things.
The F28 fault code on Vaillant boilers is an ignition lockout fault code, which means that the burner has failed to light for some reason.
This fault code can be caused by a lot of things including; ;
An issue with the gas supply.
A faulty gas valve.
Blocked condensate trap/pipework.
A faulty printed circuit board.
Or an issue with the spark electrode lead – which is not uncommon on true ecoTEC boiler models.
