This fault code will probably leave you without heating or hot water.
The E2 fault code is trying to tell you that the printed circuit board(PCB) isn’t getting a reading from the primary negative temperature coefficient(NTC) thermistor sensor.
The thermistor is a sensor which detects temperature, as the temperature rises the resistance of the thermistor goes down.
The printed circuit board correlates a certain resistance with a certain temperature.
On most Worcester Bosch Greenstar boilers there is no thermistor sensor on the return pipe, just on the flow pipe.
The primary thermistor is the only means for the boiler to know how hot it is getting.
If this sensor fails the boiler has no means of regulating its temperature and would likely overheat, hence the boiler shuts down entirely with the E2 fault code for safety reasons.
In our experience thermistor failure on the 2005 – 2015 Greenstar CDI boilers is one of the less common problems they have.
Sometimes thermistors can fail in such a way that they provide a reading at lower temperatures, but go open circuit and provide no reading above a certain temperature.
If this is the case you may be able to get your boiler working intermittently if the thermistor hasn’t failed completely.
Either way you should get a heating industry professional to have a look at your boiler at your earliest convenience if you are experiencing the E2 fault code.
